HSK 4 Sentence Patterns
When language begins to carry the weight of thought
There is a thin boundary between being able to speak Chinese and speaking Chinese with depth. HSK 4 is where learners cross that boundary. This collection of sentence patterns not only helps you assemble words into sentences, but also teaches you how to organize ideas, build arguments, and express nuances that beginner-level language cannot reach.

Who is this set for?
For those who have passed basic communication and want to express more deeply
You can introduce yourself, talk about your day, ask for directions, and order food. But when you need to present a viewpoint, defend a position, or express complex emotions like regret, skepticism, or conditional concession, you suddenly find your sentence repertoire becoming narrow.
The sentences you produce are grammatically correct, but they are monotonous. You understand native speakers when they speak slowly, but when they debate, justify, or use embedded structures, you only catch fragments of meaning. That is not a vocabulary problem. It is a sign that you need a richer system of sentence patterns to think in Chinese, rather than just translating from Vietnamese.
This material is for those who have completed HSK 3 or have an equivalent level, are preparing for HSK 4, or simply want to cross the intermediate threshold to enter a language zone where ideas are presented in a structured way.
About this learning set
Where does HSK 4 stand on the Chinese proficiency map?
HSK 4 is the upper-intermediate level in the HSK system, marking a shift from daily communication to in-depth expression. This sentence pattern collection focuses on structures that allow learners to establish logical relationships between ideas: cause and effect, condition and hypothesis, concession and rebuttal, comparison and contrast.
This collection is positioned between the stage where learners have mastered simple and basic compound sentences, and the stage of processing argumentative texts, speeches, or professional exchanges. The main task is to equip learners with the ability not only to speak correctly, but to speak with structure, focus, and the ability to adjust nuances depending on context.
The content includes sentence patterns for expressing personal opinions, emphasis structures, ways to express degrees, sentence patterns used in polite debate, and expressions of emotion that are much more nuanced than in the previous three levels. Many sentence patterns here do not have a one-to-one Vietnamese translation, but require learners to understand the internal logic of Chinese.
After completing this material, learners can participate in in-depth discussions, write well-structured paragraphs, read and understand articles and essays at an intermediate level, and have sufficient foundation to approach HSK 5, where language becomes a tool for critical thinking and cultural expression. The value of HSK 4 lies not in the number of sentence patterns, but in opening up a new way of thinking in Chinese.
