Typing Does Not Make Handwriting Obsolete

We can type Chinese before we can write characters confidently by hand. That practical fact, however, does not prove that handwriting has no value or that the two skills are interchangeable.

A learner finishes a beginner lesson, opens a message box, types lao in Pinyin, and selects 老 from the candidate list. The character appears correctly, even though the learner could not reproduce it on paper without help. Does this mean handwriting should have come first, or does it mean handwriting is no longer necessary? To answer honestly, we need to stop treating typing and handwriting as two versions of the same skill.

One written result, two retrieval tasks

A handwritten sentence and a typed sentence may produce the same visible result: a line of Chinese characters. But the routes leading to that result are different. We should not stretch that conclusion beyond what the mechanism demonstrates. Successfully typing 老 tells us that the learner can produce it through a keyboard under those conditions. It does not tell us whether the learner can write it with the candidate list hidden. It also does not establish how durable the learner’s memory of the character’s form will be.
